Self-Care Tips for Us Moms

Don't Forget About You

By Monica Rohleder October 2, 2018

Well, October has started, we are one month into school and I am already exhausted. I know I should be applauding the kids being back to a regular schedule - and myself kind of - but, the early morning wake-up calls, after-school activities, homework and weekend commitments can be draining. Sometimes, I feel like I just can't pack another lunch, dress another kid or plan another day of pick-ups and drop-offs. And then there's the work outside of being a mom. It can be a lot.

For me, I really try to stick to a committed schedule of activities that keep me breathing, moving and shaking off the stress. It's not always easy, but here are some of my favorite activities to stay sane and healthy:

1. SUP Yoga - I discovered yoga about 12 years ago and paddleboarding about 8 years ago and I love them separately...so why not together. This great company - Yogaqua - puts on several SUP yoga classes in Mother's Beach in Marina Del Rey. I have to say, I love the classes. The perfect blend of movement, breathing, energy building, relaxation, and serenity, you will walk away feeling revived and refreshed.

2. Pilates - Like Yoga, Pilates has helped to change my body for the better. Lengthening my muscles, strengthening my core and helping me to find balance overall, I am addicted to the results. And my favorite place (which I have mentioned before) is Mamai Wellness in Westchester. Sandra - the owner and instructor - creates the perfect session that helps you to meet your body goals.

3. Hike - We live in LA and we have glorious weather to enjoy all year long. So why not get out and enjoy nature with a brisk hike. Whether you go for 30 minutes or 3 hours, there is something for everyone. I am a fan of Temescal Canyon near Santa Monica, but there is always some great options in Culver City like the Culver City Stairs or the Bluffs in Playa Del Rey

4. Personal Grooming - OK, yes, it may feel like a guilty pleasure - or just make you feel plain guilty, but I try to keep up to feel good about myself! Some of my favorite services include mani/pedis at Happy Nails, Facials from Kim Sommer at Dermarenewal and a good massage and skin scrub at Burke Williams

Whatever you love to do, just make sure you take some time for you!
